Abstract

Ghoom case depicts the situation faced by Aishwarya Kachhal, CEO, to quickly ramp up the business after the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic and partner with complementary companies to develop their own shared mobility platform that includes hardware and software platforms. Ghoom was building an affordable, convenient, personal, and clean shared mobility platform primarily catering to India’s capital, Delhi-based customers. Ghoom was a Harvard innovation lab incubated company with the twin distinction of being the only one from India and the only one in electric mobility in the cohort of 22 global companies. The case was written post-second wave Covid-19 (September 2021), when most start-ups were in deep financial trouble. Almost all start-ups were redefining their business strategy by doing some form of innovation. This case talks about Open Innovation, a relatively new model coined by Henry Chesbrough in 2003 and successfully practised by many big companies and start-ups. This Open Innovation Model (OIM) talks about adopting what is already available in the market by licensing, acquiring and building on top of that to reduce time to market and investment in R&D without losing development time. This case deals with Kachhal’s quest to adopt and implement the OIM at Ghoom.
