Abstract

Since the dawn of globalization, the business environment has continually experienced stiff competition, necessitating entrepreneurs to possess essential competencies for growth, survival, and superior performance. Against this backdrop, this study examined how competitiveness influences the relationship between entrepreneurial competencies and business performance, acting as a mediating factor. The study employed resource-based theory as its theoretical framework, which asserts competencies as valuable and intangible resources leading to superior performance. The data were collected from 311 entrepreneurs among the tribals in ten Hill Districts of Manipur, with the help of a five-point Likert scale questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics with the help of IBM SPSS. With the aid of SmartPLS4, partial least squares path modeling was used in testing the hypotheses. The study reveals that entrepreneurial competencies have a positive, weak, significant effect on competitiveness and business performance, and competitiveness partially mediates the relationship between competencies and performance. Considering the relatively weak relationship, the study highlighted the necessity for training in enhancing competencies for improving business performance and the role of various stakeholders, such as the government, relevant agencies, and institutions, in providing training and development programs.
